Moving further westward we find ourselves in the land of the Great Gold Rush, The Yukon! There are plenty of opportunities for the angler here with Trout, Pacific Salmon (Chinook Coho and Chum), Grayling, Pike, Walleye and Char just waiting to be caught. Although I have been to the Yukon a couple of times my time there was short, Thus my fishing there was limited. I spent a few days fishing the Yukon river and some of the surrounding lakes. On all of my trips here I was too late to enjoy the Yukon rivers large runs of Pacific Salmon. There are also Lake Trout, Grayling and Whitefish to be found in these waters. I fished a couple of the local lakes and had great success catching Rainbow Trout, Grayling and Arctic Char on the fly. One lake in particular is just west of Whitehorse, heading west on the Alaska Highway turn left onto fish lake road and a couple of miles you will see this small lake. This lake is about 1/4 mile wide by 1/2 mile long and has a small power generation dam on it. The fishing can be particularly good here with above average catches of Rainbows, Char and Grayling. In September there is an excellent hatch of Notonectidae or backswimmers. When these bugs are active at the beginning of September the trout really put on the feed bag! A local pattern that works extremely well is a small dark nymph with a dark red bead head. The Yukon Fish and Game department stocks quite a few local pot hole lakes with one or more of these three species. There are some very good Lake Trout Lakes in the area also. But there is a lot more than just fishing here, the area is rich with history. Dawson City site of the discovery of Gold in 1896 is a bustling little community that still has the feel of that era. There is a wonderful provincial campground and lots to see. You can visit museums, working gold mines and institutions like Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall, you can even pan for gold and bring a piece of history home with you. As I spend more time exploring this area I will add to this section on the Yukon.
